Community Health
Nicky Smith has been employed as a nurse for over thirteen years, where she has developed professional knowledge in various aspects of the nursing profession. These include long term, sub-acute and acute care, hospice, and home care. In the past four years she has studied at Lourdes University, where she graduated in May, 2019 with a Master’s Degree in Nursing Education. Also within the last four years she has maintained a clinical focus in community health, caring for hospice and home care patients. Community health nursing requires one to gear their focus on patient centered care, while including ones environment, family, culture, and beliefs in to patient goals. With her combined experience and knowledge in community settings, she plans to assist in the development of professional nurses who will feel confident in various situations and roles throughout their careers.
Teaching
Throughout her thirteen years of practice, she has enjoyed not only being a mentor but an educator to students, fellow nurses, patients, and their families. Nicky has primarily taught students at the undergraduate level within their med surg lecture and clinical rotation. She has also guided and instructed students in their lab check off assignments. However, within every level of her career she has been a preceptor to new employees and student interns. In 2019 she presented at the University of Toledo’s Graduate Research Symposium where she received second place for her Capstone Proposal, Integrating Medical Marijuana in to Nursing Education. In 2018 she also won the Graduate Research award from Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Chapter, in relation to her research efforts regarding medical marijuana.
